First published in 1852, this instruction manual written by the President of the Glasgow Skating Club ran to several editions and was translated into German and Swedish. It covers the early history of skating and types of skates, with instructiions and diagrams for two feet movements, single foot forward and backward movements, and concerted figure skating. The author makes a point of encouraging potential female skaters with advice as to the most suitable type of skate, the use of a learners' frame and figures that they should aspire to attaining. "I like to see ladies skate; though, no doubt, the early steps must be rather trying to female nerves and female draperies; but more in idea than reality, for, with careful instructions, a lady may acquire sufficient skill to move about freely without any extensive ordeal of falls.
